Notes of Parish Meetings

Notes from the Parish Council Meeting - November 2011

The following were amongst items discussed at Parish Council meetings and information received by the Clerk. The full minutes may be found here.

The Chairman welcomed our new Clerk, Mrs Susie Cumming, to the meeting, but also had to announce the resignation of Cllr Peter Johnson due to pressures of work. He paid tribute to Peter's work particularly as vice-chairman of the Sport and Recreation Committee and youth liaison officer.

The main item on the agenda was an application by the Cricket Club to erect a demountable two-bay cricket net in the space between the tennis courts and the pavilion. The Council however took the view that there had been insufficient consultation, and deferred a decision to an extraordinary meeting to be held on 10 November.

At that meeting on 10 November the Council will also formulate its response to the North-West Cambridge planning application. The details are all on line at and although the deadline will have passed by the time the News is published, the Parish Council will still be interested in your views.

In order to enable our staff to cope with their ever-increasing workload the Council has decided to limit the hours the office is open to the public and councillors: the Parish Office is now open from 10.00 a.m. to 12:00 each Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

The Recreation Ground

The playing fields have rather suffered from the very dry summer, but the Groundsman still keeps them in excellent condition for sport. New signs reminding users that dogs and cycles are not permitted on the recreation ground.

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment

SCDC is assessing options for housing developments over the coming years, and has invited suggestions of suitable areas. Six have been proposed in Girton, and the District Council is now consulting on these. Details can be found at which will take you to SCDC's website. If you wish to respond please also copy the Parish Council in on your response.

As winter approaches and we are all busy trimming our hedges, please may we request everyone to think of their neighbors when considering a bonfire. We have had complaints of smoke nuisance which is particularly irritating on a bright weekend afternoon. Please use your green bin rather than buring waste and be very considerate of others if you feel you need a fire.

Celebrate the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games

The County Council has funding to help local groups create activities to celebrate the Olympics and Paralympics in the local community. Celebrations must be inspired by London 2012, and should `welcome the world' or involve and inspire young people, and create a lasting and positive legacy in the community. Grants will be up to a maximum of £50. For more details and an application form, please contact Denise Evans, Cambridgeshire County Council, Box No. CC1315, Castle Court, Shire Hall, Cambridge CB3 0AP or email
